David Kontra

The first indication of trouble for David was at age nine when glasses were recommended for his falling grades and his inability to see the blackboard in school. Seven years and countless specialists later he was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa at sixteen. David recalls, “It was a very depressing time for me. I tried to figure out what to do with my life, but every time I came up with an idea for a vocation, someone would tell me ‘you can’t do that’. When I finally quit feeling sorry for myself and stopped listening to other people, I found things to do…from working in a Chevy plant to running a cafeteria to being an antiques dealer. I started painting in 2001 and it opened up a whole new world for me.” Classified as legally blind, David cannot see the entire surface he is painting. He must lower his head until his nose almost touches the canvas, wood or found objects that he paints. Using very strong glasses for some details, special tools including awls and sharpened sticks, and his sense of touch, David creates works that astound the fully sighted. “I wonder what all those people who said, ‘you can’t do that’, would’ve said if I’d told them I wanted to be an artist?”
