Lisa D. Cain, Ph.D.
Lisa D. Cain, Ph.D., a self-taught artist, is a native of Canton, Mississippi. She attended the Mt. Hope Missionary Baptist Church and thanks her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for giving her the gift of creativity. Her art provides an overview and pictorial demonstration of the culture and traditions of the rural South.Through her art she tells the story of her childhood in Canton and honors the life of her grandmother, Mrs. Lourvernia Torrence. She picked cotton, planted gardens and quilted with her grandmother. Her art expresses the joy that she felt growing up in her home town comminity. Her paintings tell the story of individuals who were proud, brilliant, hardworking, strong and who loved each other, God and who valued nature.
Her art has been exhibited in galleries across the United States, exhibited in art shows, featured in magazines such as Southern Living and Texas Monthly and has been included on the set of two national television shows: "The Trial and Error" and "The Family Reunion", a new Netflix show. She is included in "Self-Taught, Outsider and Folk Art" - A Guide to American Artists Locations and Resources Third Edition by Betty-Carol Sellen.
She has also published her own book entitled "Art of the Spirit" (Authorhouse Publishers). She is a leader and educator, whose foundation was formed by her grandmother, her parents and the community of Canton, MIssissippi.
Her foundation is the essence of who she is as an individual and the spirit and energy behind her art.
